Beyond the Easter Bunny - an Easter Egg Hunt for my pre-teen and teenager

As Easter approached this year my 11 year old started talking about how I would just give them a block of chocolate because they know about the Easter Bunny (and apparently has known ever since he "saw" Dad hiding them one year, which is funny because I don't think Dallas has EVER hidden the Easter Eggs).  Anyway, I went looking for some ideas to have fun with them instead of just handing them chocolate.  All of the ideas were just variations on the regular Easter egg hunt.  So I came up with this.

Let me just say in advance that I mean no disrespect to the Australian Cricket Team :)  We just happened to have enough of their KFC toys that they made a great gang of criminals for the purposes of our game.  I'm pretty sure they are not roaming the countryside stealing chocolate from small children.

I also know that I have used most of the characters in ways that are not true to their actual stories.  I actually have no clue how Pokeballs are used.  It's all in good fun.

Lastly I ALSO know that Easter egg hunts are usually Sunday morning.  Since this was just for fun and absolutely nothing to do with the real meaning of Easter I decided to do it on Saturday.  Also church is at 9 on Sunday and I think my son's teacher will appreciate it if he doesn't have chocolate for breakfast before coming.

Getting Started

The kids rooms face each other so I strung this across the hallway outside their bedrooms.  That way whoever saw it first could wake up the other one.  Turned out the 14 year old (Megan) was up first and dragged her brother out of bed.  The rolled up paper is the first clue, and the bags are to collect eggs and gang members in.  The clues are styled to look like my 11 year old's favourite books - Geronimo Stilton.

After a quick trip to the amenities they read the first clue.  At this point Reid was saying "can't I just go play X-box" but Megan was excited.

Clue 1 led them upstairs to our collection of He-man toys.

Next clue:

From here they were led downstairs to the Smurf Village located opposite the land of XBoxia, behind the couches.  By now Reid was starting to get into it but I think he was still half asleep.

That's Fergamel up there on the blue house :)

Clue 3 led them back upstairs to my en-suite bathroom where every Pokemon toy that we own was hanging out in our bath.  Megan had to point out that one of the red eggs was actually pink.

Next stop was outside to the trampoline.  I was really hoping it wouldn't rain because it usually rains here on Easter weekend when everyone is camping.

If I could be bothered I could have made both the Smurf Village and the Shrek castle a bit more creative.  I really couldn't be bothered.

By now Reid was totally into it.  They thought this one was pretty fun.  One of the eggs rolled off across the trampoline and so Far Far Away was destroyed by an earthquake.

The next clue sent them upstairs to the "Sparebedroomeda Galaxy", where this was waiting in the wardrobe.

This is one of my favourites.  Reid has a big poster that a friend gave him that was perfect for a background.

The next clue came about because Reid has been enjoying DC Legends of Tomorrow which has a character called Rip Hunter.

Back downstairs again to our back room, where a dinosaur has barfed all over the floor after eating chocolate.  They thought that was pretty funny.

This one sent them outside to the banana tree.  There was only one pair of thongs outside and they were too excited to come back in to get another pair so they took one each and hopped over to the tree.

The last clue sent them back upstairs (got to work off those Easter Eggs in advance) to my bedroom where the Sparkling Caverns was my jewellery box/mirror.  This one is my favourite, partly because of the minions but I also thought the Siddler was pretty funny.  Megan thought it was hilarious that I drew on his face to make him look like the Joker.

The note here sent them back downstairs to find "The Elusive Trashcan", which is in the laundry.

They found the Knights of the Elusive Trashcan and the Jail, where I left a few final eggs.  The Pakistani cricket team is ready to torment the Aussies.

Final verdict - great fun for them and fun for me to watch them.   I'm not sure how I am going to beat this next year though...

13 night cruise around New Zealand on the Dawn Princess

On January 3rd we embarked on our fourth cruise with our friends, the Penney family.  We have known the Penney family since our kids were very young, with our youngest children born only 2 weeks apart. Given some potential medical concerns, we chose a New Zealand cruise as it would have been fairly easy to access high quality health care if needed. This was the first time that the Penneys had cruised. We had previously done two P&O cruises to Vanuatu and New Caledonia, and a Disney cruise from Florida to the Caribbean.  This time we were cruising with Princess on the Dawn Princess. Comparison of Cruise Lines It was interesting to note the differences between the ships.  We found that the P&O ships had a much younger demographic, with a party atmosphere and an emphasis on the nightlife.  The Disney cruise of course had a heavy family focus. We found the ship, the service, the shows and the theming to be exceptional on the Disney cruise but did not particularly like

The day that both broke and warmed my heart – 15 Jan 2011

Yesterday I cried all the way home from Fairfield to Windaroo. My home was well away from the floods. I hadn’t lost anything except my naïve assumptions about the damage a flood can do. But I couldn’t hold back the emotion. As the flood waters receded, we knew that we had to do something to help those affected by the Brisbane floods. Thousands of homes had been inundated by flood waters and they were saying on TV and on the internet that an army of volunteers was needed. I arranged for my Mum to come and watch the kids for the day, packed the car with brooms, shovels, mops, buckets, water and other cleaning supplies, and set off to try to “do some good”. My brother in law and his wife had friends on a street in Fairfield whose house had been submerged up to just under their roof, so they sent me the address and I headed for Fairfield. I was nervous as I didn’t know what to expect. As I drove under the overpass at Mt Gravatt I saw a huge line of volunteers over the bridg

Adventures in Parenting

We decided that something we had to address with the kids was the fact that Reid was sleeping on Megan's floor on a mattress every night, which meant that neither of them were getting enough sleep. So I took the mattress out of her room one day and hid it in my cupboard, and told Reid he could sleep in his room or the spare room, just not Megan's room. When it came down to it, the only way to get Reid to sleep in a separate room was to lay down in bed with him until he fell asleep. For a few weeks now that's what we've been doing. Overall it is working. Reid is sleeping in a different room, and Megan is getting more sleep. This plan has it's disadvantages though. For one, most nights it's pretty even odds who is going to fall asleep first - him or me. A few nights I have woken up at 9:30pm to find him finally asleep next to me. How I fall asleep I don't know because Reid going to sleep is like a dog going to sleep - how they get up and down and turn a
